Using Music, Resonance, and Harmonics for Human Wellbeing with Alexandre Tannous | TGS 128
(Conversation recorded on May 1st, 2024)
Show Summary:
Music has been an integral part of the human experience for thousands of years, and continues to embody a unique aspect of culture across the world today - yet most people hold only a preliminary understanding of the full range of benefits that sound, resonance, and harmonics can provide. Today, Nate is joined by ethnomusicologist Alexandre Tannous for a deep dive on the evolution of the human relationship with sound and how music could be used as a tool to facilitate personal resilience and healing. How can resonance quiet our reptilian fight-or-flight system and positively impact personal and group consciousness? When grounded in ceremony, how does music enhance spirituality and well-being for communities? What could a world look like in which every human has the access and energy to focus on healing themselves through the powerful tools of sound and meditation?
About Alexandre Tannous:
Alexandre Tannous is an ethnomusicologist, sound therapist and sound researcher who holds four degrees in music, and years of experience performing, composing, conducting, teaching and lecturing on music. He has been investigating the therapeutic and esoteric properties of sound from three different perspectives - Western scientific, Eastern philosophical, and shamanic societal beliefs - to gain a deeper understanding of how, and to what extent, sound has been used to affect human consciousness.
The material he transmits about sound is based on multidisciplinary research conducted over 24 years. Inspired by his findings, he designed a protocol of an integrated experience he calls “Sound Meditation”, raising an awareness to how a specifically designed sound can have the ability to help us to disconnect from habitual patterns while judiciously listening to the overtone-rich instruments he plays. He uses a method that empowers the participants to engage actively with tools that enhance their experience.

Alexandre was a guest teacher in the Sonic Theology program at 9ways academia which I attended in 2023. A true teacher that transcends & includes all of the inner teaching ( mysticism) of sound. There are 3 aspects to sound, one which you can hear ( auditory & brain, mind) the second is how sound transport you to your inner voyage and lastly the secret level, how master’s teaches through the wings of the sound. It all comes down to what he implies with Ethos, Pathos, Gnosis. Alexandre is a shaman shaman’s , that is a teacher of teachers. And we are thankful for that.

Putin and the Russian government basically have nothing to offer the Russian ppl. The great desire of the Russians it to be seen and considered a great country and culture. This has been the great weakness of the Russian ppl that have had these ideas shoved down the ppls throats for over a millennia and allowed them to be dominated by one tyrant after another who promises to “Make Russia great again.” Just imagine centuries of one Donald Trump after another for many centuries who is a murderous megalomaniac who loves making his ppl suffer. This guys numbers are just wrong regarding the Russian deaths. Russians are dying 4/1 due to their terrible war tactics and western precision weapons. Anyway this is how Outin keep his power and how Russians find common meaning and purpose through expanding empire. Russia is rebuilding their empire and this is why half the Russians love this bloodbath. This is the future of the U.S. they are showing us. It’s an oligarchic totalitarian system that grows by expansion and crash and grab techniques of empire. The oligarchs are not interested in investing in their countries future. They are interested in war as they make money off this, they like taking natural resources and don’t care about innovation. Innovation requires educated ppl that begin to question the order of the country. This is what the GOP want to turn the U.S. into. An empire that uses war to expand corporate access to Markets and resources. I’m sorry I just done by much of what this guy is saying. He seems very biased. The Democratic countries of Europe determined to stop Putin bc he will Not stop till He is stopped. It’s all good old fashioned great power politics with the newly expanding Russian empire. Don’t propose we just handover Eastern Europe to Putin bc he has nukes? What about all the children kidnapped? Who is going to return these kids to their families? It’s pure evil what the Russians are doing and we who support Ukraine are against this evil empire and we refuse to allow them to grow to dominate Europe again.

My greatest fear is that after all this: the food chain collapse from the bottom up, climate catastrophe after climate catastrophe, complete societal devastation, nation after nation goes dark and cease to be, that the monopoly of violence, the might makes right narrative continue. It is in large part why humanity is where it’s at right now. So, for goodness sake, may cooperation, problem solving, intelligence, art, creativity, music, science, education, wisdom and enlightenment of the many, not just the few, become the means by which the remnant of humanity that does survive, are enabled to reach our truer potential. A potential that’s rarely realized, and typically extinguished, in the failure that humanity has allowed itself to be.

In the blink of an eye the old conservatives went from “pull yourself up by the bootstraps and stop whining all the time” to “it’s too big and complex to try solving anything leave me alone”. Older generations have failed us, repeatedly, in ways we may never recover from. But we will try to correct course and I hope none of them are around to see a better world.

In college, I snagged a NASA white paper off a cart of books to be destroyed called, “Solar in Space”. NASA had developed in the 70’ viable technology to put arrays of photovoltaic panels in orbit. Using a microwave technology, transmit electric energy to receiving nodes on the planet surface, that for far less than the cost to invade Iraq to implement Paul Wolfowitz’s, “Plan For The New American Century”, and a minimal annual tax, provide every man, woman and child on the planet with relatively cost free electricity in perpetuity. However, in the epilogue, according to NASA’s analysis, the result of cost free energy being introduced into our global oil based economy would be economically catastrophic. That it would collapse the world’s economic system, and take up to 50 years to recover. So NASA shelved the project. During the Iraq war, the Pentagon met with the Bush administration, stating that it was too expensive to fight war for oil, and suggested it was time to deploy NASA’s Solar in Space program.

If our civilization were not energy blind that we would be producing small modular thorium molten salt reactors to the tune of more than 1 per week. Fully ready and shipped on our roadways. The only thing then needed would be the fission load as no hard fuel rods and the waste from current reactors. Fueling and being cleaned up nation wide at all swimming pool American waste storage pools. Xenon outgassing and tellurium cleaning would occur while running needing no shutdown for refueling.

Thanks Nate for caring, about us, about our world, and spelling out that we are an uncaring monstrous organism. Our billions of humans change things we wish to remain to subservient smaller units which possibly makes us less as humans. We are not on the same path as we were when I was born in 1947. Some things technologically much better, other things cheaper or non-existent. Many things occurred in my high school years in the 60's and many other things changed as my middle age struggle showed some things much better and other things much worse. Like the herring having no breeding ground and dropping massively in numbers. The same changing of the equinox occured bringing warm water to our Pacific Oregon ocean but meanwhile enough huge warming to change the climate here in Washington State, bringing insects which now overwinter in our forests but no trees exploding in winter as -30 ° temperatures no longer occur. Things change your whole life but still stay the same. Underlying principals stay perfectly in line. My guess is through atmospheric forcing we have removed the ice ages but we will see in time.

I think it's a safe bet that if the world order doesn't collapse before 2030, the we will see the superintelligence that enables a couple centuries of technological development in years. I'm curious whether there is anything in that tech tree that provides cheap and abundant energy. If yes, then the show continues. If no then I'm curious whether the super AI sees the limited available energy as a zero sum game or not.

Hold your horses.... I'm from Mexico and the reason we call Americans "Norteamericanos" is because we have a gripe many times using the term Americanos because all of us in Latin America say consider ourselves AMERICAN since we are on the American continent... but Mexico is considered in our minds part of NORTH AMERICA... also the U.S. name in Spanish is ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMERICA... but many times it is wrongfully reffered to as ESTADOS UNIDOS DE NORTEAMERICA just to make it clearer or just out of custom. When it comes to what used to be the North American Free Trade Agreement... (now with a different name), México DOES CONSIDER ITSELF PART OF NORTH AMERICA for sure! (geographically México is part of North America... strictly speaking at least form the Isthmus of Tehuantepec up it is!)

“Curiosity. Craving to understand reality, to get as close as possible to the truth, rather than holding onto any sort of beliefs, based on science, and based on fact, if you’re curious enough to go there”, is a wonderful mindset to have, to hold space through what will undoubtedly be a rough path ahead, to arrive at the other side a far more enriched human being - quite possibly an enlightened one.

Wow Nate, can't believe you came here. As an aside, we have so many stray dogs because their populations exploded in the 90s because most of our vultures died out. That happened because of a veterinary drug that was being used as a painkiller for cattle. The vultures would feed on dead cattle and the drug proved fatal for them. The quick decline of vulture populations left a lot of food (dead cattle) suddenly available to be eaten, and dogs came in to fill the void.

The real taboo is not the idea of the control of the population; it is the idea of the quality of the population. If Jews account for 0.2% of the world's population and have won 25% of the Nobel Prizes, the obvious question is how many banana-republic individuals are worth one Jewish baby. Based on this premise, the mother of all taboos is what population, ethnicity, or nationality is worth having and which ain't.

The west pretty much invented the 12 note octave in order to standardize music. Music was mainly composed for the elite classes, and they wanted to ensure when a piece was played for them it was supposed to identical to any other playing. They also didn’t want it to be complex enough that there were very few masters of the instruments. They basically sought simplify and to make music performance more of a commodity. Initially this was with Just Intonation (rules of small relative ratios between notes) however this had issues as only notes within the same key were consistent. Then we switched to a mathematical equal temperament. But in the end it was really just based filtering down tones that sounded pleasant and reverberated well in the large palaces of the elite. Notes that did not ring out or sounded a to have little to much dissonance were excluded from the scale.

72 tones per octave... that would make a 7 octave standard piano with 504 keys! The beauty of the western scale is it makes music so accesible. That is why the piano and guitar are the best selling instruments in the world. It ia a trade off of time required to achieve proficiency vs complexity of scale or tuning. In traditional cultures with more granular scales musicians are increasingly vocational as it requires serious dedication to achieve relative proficiency.

When it becomes the norm for humans to live lives detached from their own humanity you get 10% of the population with dark triad traits, and growing. If we don’t reconnect with nature it’s over for us. The planet and its species that we haven’t destroyed will be fine once humanity is gone.
